Nkumba University has appointed Dr. Sulaiman Bbosa as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor, ending a four-year vacancy in one of the institution’s top leadership positions.
The position became vacant in 2022 following the elevation of the then Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, to the office of Vice Chancellor. Since then, the university has been operating without a substantive holder in the role as the Board of Trustees conducted a search for a suitable candidate.
Announcing the appointment, the Chairperson Board of Trustees, Mr. Muhammad Kalyango, said the recruitment process had been deliberate and thorough to ensure the university secured a competent leader capable of advancing its mission. “The search for a Deputy Vice Chancellor has been a deliberate and thorough process. We are pleased to welcome one of our own to this important office, and we are confident that Dr. Bbosa possesses the leadership, experience, and commitment necessary to advance the University’s vision and strategic objectives,” Mr. Kalyango said.
University Secretary Mr. Francis Ssengendo said the appointment was made in accordance with the university’s governing legal framework. “The appointment has been made in accordance with Section 48 of the Nkumba University Charter, 2007,” Mr. Ssengendo said.
Dr. Bbosa brings to the position extensive experience in higher education leadership, academic administration, research, and institutional development. Over the years, he has served Nkumba University in various capacities, playing key roles in promoting academic excellence, quality assurance, strategic planning, and student-centered learning.
He joined Nkumba University in 2008 as a student and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as an Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, and later a Senior Lecturer. He subsequently assumed several leadership and managerial positions, including Head Coach of the University Football Team, Marketing Manager, and Director- Kampala Campus. In 2024, Dr. Bbosa guided the University Football team to the first-ever University Football League Trophy, which earned the university a place to represent Uganda at the All-African University Games in Lagos, Nigeria.
University officials described him as a distinguished academic, administrator, and researcher whose long service to the institution has given him a deep understanding of its operations, culture, and aspirations.
With his new position, Dr. Bbosa is expected to provide strategic leadership as the University transitions to a purely Competence-Based Curriculum.
In a statement, the Board of Trustees and University Management called upon everyone to support the new Deputy Vice Chancellor as he assumes office. “The Board of Trustees and University Management call upon all staff, students, parents, alumni, development partners, and stakeholders to accord the newly appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor the support and cooperation necessary to enable him to effectively discharge his duties and contribute to the continued growth and transformation of the University,” the statement reads in part.
