Nkumba, 25th June 2026– Nkumba University has partnered with Ndejje University to host the 2026 Nkumba International Research Conference (NIRC), with academics calling for stronger research collaborations and increased publication of scholarly work to drive sustainable development and inform policy.
The conference, held under the theme “Catalyzing Research, Knowledge and Innovation in Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” brought together researchers, policymakers, industry players, development partners, and students to discuss how research can address pressing societal challenges and accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking at the conference, the Vice Chancellor of Nkumba University, Prof. Jude Lubega, said the annual event reflects the institution’s commitment to promoting research, innovation, and knowledge generation as key drivers of sustainable development. “It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Nkumba International Research Conference 2026. He noted that research remains central to finding practical solutions to challenges affecting communities and improving livelihoods.
Prof. Lubega particularly lauded the Nkumba-Ndejje collaboration, describing it as a demonstration of the growing importance of inter-university partnerships in promoting academic excellence. “I am particularly delighted that this year’s conference is being organized in partnership with Ndejje University. This collaboration demonstrates the power of inter-university cooperation in promoting academic excellence and impactful research,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also acknowledged the continued support of institutions such as the National Drug Authority and the National Planning Authority, saying their contribution has helped establish NIRC as a credible platform for scholarly engagement and evidence-based policy discussions.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Christopher Mayanja, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ndejje University, urged researchers to move beyond presenting papers at conferences and focus on publishing their findings to increase their impact. “Do not leave your papers at the conference stage. Process them further into publications because that is where research creates greater value and reaches wider audiences,” Dr. Mayanja said.
He encouraged scholars to embrace co-authorship and collaborative research, arguing that collective intellectual effort often produces stronger and more impactful outcomes. “Co-authoring allows scholars to bring their minds together and generate stronger ideas. We are moving away from the era of competition between institutions and embracing collaboration so that we can grow together for a common good,” he added.
