The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has rallied the Nkumba University Ladies’ Football Team to fly Uganda’s flag high at the forthcoming All Africa University Games in Cairo, Egypt.
The team, which will represent Uganda at the continental championship scheduled for 6th–16th September 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Prime Minister ahead of its departure for Egypt.
Speaking during the meeting, Rt. Hon. Kadaga congratulated the players for earning the opportunity to represent both Nkumba University and Uganda, urging them to remain disciplined, focused and determined throughout the tournament. “You are carrying the hopes of your university and your country. Represent Uganda well, remain disciplined and return home victorious.”
She encouraged the players to make the most of the opportunities available through university sports, noting that excellence in academics and athletics can go hand in hand.
The Deputy Prime Minister also pledged government support towards the team’s participation, saying initiatives that promote youth talent and national representation deserve collective backing.
The Nkumba University delegation was led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Sulaiman Bbosa, and included the Dean of Students, the University Sports Tutor and the team’s head coach and players.
Dr Bbosa described the meeting as a strong vote of confidence in the team’s preparations, saying the Minister’s encouragement would motivate the players as they embark on the continental challenge. “This is a significant gesture from the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga. It has inspired our players and reaffirmed that they carry not only the aspirations of Nkumba University but also those of Uganda.”
Dr. Bbosa also challenged other partners and well wishers to support the team, “We call upon our students, alumni, partners and well-wishers to continue supporting the team as they prepare for this historic assignment.”
The team secured its place at the All Africa University Games after emerging champions of the 2026 International Women’s Day Inter-University Football Championship, earning the right to represent Uganda at the continental competition.
In recent weeks, the University has intensified mobilisation efforts to raise travel and participation funds. Alumni, development partners, staff, students and well-wishers have joined the campaign to ensure the team travels to Cairo fully prepared.
The All Africa University Games bring together top university athletes from across the continent to compete in various sporting disciplines while promoting sportsmanship, cultural exchange and academic collaboration. For Nkumba University, the tournament presents an opportunity to showcase its growing investment in university sports and reinforce its reputation as a nurturing ground for talent capable of competing on the continental stage.
