The role of a university as known  today emanates from the work of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman in his book titled “The idea of a university” published in 1852. Cardinal regarded teaching as the primary role of a university. This was based on his English background.

However, the German model of research was subsequently added, and after the world war, the need for community service became evident. In emerging global model research has now taken prominence as the primary role of a university.
