A shocking video emerged on Tuesday evening showing Suubi Balidawa, a suspect in a hit-and-run case, setting his vehicle ablaze in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.

According to police reports, Balidawa was involved in an accident on May 7th, 2024, along Gayaza Road, where he knocked and injured a pedestrian, Nakabaliki Naome. Despite attempts to flee the scene, he was compelled by boda-boda riders to take the victim to the hospital.

Police says, Balidawa voluntarily reported the incidence to police but provided a false number plate, leading to a prolonged investigation. He eventually reported to Kanyanya Police Station on May 17th, 2024, where he confessed to providing a false number plate and accepted liability for the crash.

While on police bond, Balidawa was instructed to produce his driving license, certificate of insurance, and registration book within five days.

Days later, a video surfaced on social media showing Balidawa setting his vehicle ablaze, prompting his rearrest at Elegu Police Station to assist with further investigations.

Police has condemned Balidawa’s actions, stating that they will not tolerate such blatant attempts to destroy evidence and undermine the justice system. “This behavior is unacceptable and shows a complete disregard for the law.” asserted Onyango.

The investigation is ongoing, and Balidawa faces charges of hit-and-run, providing false information, and attempted destruction of evidence.

This incident has sparked outrage among Ugandans, who are calling for stricter traffic laws and greater accountability for reckless drivers.

The victim’s family is still seeking justice, “We demand justice for our mother and hope that the authorities will ensure that Balidawa faces the consequences of his actions.” said Nakabaliki Naome’s son, Kamuhanda Edward.

Police has assured them of a thorough investigation to ensure that Balidawa faces the full force of the law and advised all drivers to abide by the law as the force continues to work tirelessly in ensuring that roads are safe for all users.
