The Vice President of Uganda, Her. Excellence Rtd.Maj. Jessica Alupo has called upon student leaders to channel their patriotism agility into tangible efforts that drive national development.
The Vice President made the call today at Nkumba University while delivering a lecture to Higher Institutions of Learning student leaders from across the country. She emphasized that patriotism extends beyond mere love for one’s country to encompass active participation in building the nation.”Put the knowledge you get from this 14-day patriotism training into action,” VP Alupo urged. “That’s what patriotism is all about.”
She further advised against the misuse of social media, noting that excessive time spent on platforms like WhatsApp can erode productivity. “It’s good to be on media to get news or market products, but remember that in political economy, man is the product, and to be productive, you must put your effort into action.”
To support the youth in their patriotic endeavors, the government has implemented various programs, including Emyoga, PEM Scholarships, and vocational training initiatives. Vice President Alupo says, “these programs aim to empower young Ugandans with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute meaningfully to national development.”
She cautioned youth to be mindful of their ambitions, warning that overambition can be counterproductive. “Some young people are driven by soft lives, which come with being in luxurious places and living a luxurious life,” she noted.
VP Alupo acknowledged the foundation laid by the NRM and encouraged the youth to build upon it. “Your ‘jajja’ (President Museveni) is the champion of integration in the African Union,” she said.
In a nod to John F. Kennedy’s iconic phrase, “Ask not what your country can do, ask what you can do for your country.” Her parting words were a call to action, urging the youth to work together to build a better Uganda. “This is for God and my country,” she concluded.
