The Nkumba Lady Marines basketball team has secured promotion to the National Basketball League’s (NBL) top flight, despite falling short in the FUBA Division One finals.

The Lady Marines lost the highly contested finals series 4-3 to Our Savior Banyabo at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium on Friday night. However, their promotion to the top tier is a win for the team.

“We returned stronger after almost two years of hiatus and secured our spot at the top tier. To us, this is victory,” said Joseph Muyira, the Nkumba University Sports Tutor.

The Lady Marines had sailed into the finals after a dominant 3-1 series victory over Amazon Rhinos. However, they were trounced by Our Savior Banyabo 60-23 in the final game, which saw Banyabo crowned the 2024 FUBA Division One Season champions.

Despite the disappointing loss, Muyira was full of praise given the team’s performance throughout the season. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the management for their continued support towards sports. I also laud the Lady Marines players and the technical team led by Coach Timothy Odeke for a job well done.”

The Lady Marines’ promotion to the top flight is a significant milestone for the team, and they will be looking to make a strong impression in the upcoming season.
