A heavy downpour on Thursday morning left areas of Nkumba University flooded, stranding many students in their hostels. The rain, which started at around 4 am and lasted until 9 am, made the university’s main gate impassable due to harsh erosion.
Lecturers were seen attending to a handful of students, while some classes had no students at all. The rain made roads and sidewalks slippery, making it difficult for students to navigate to campus. Those who attempted to attend classes were soaked from head to toe, despite using umbrellas and rain gear.
Sarah Nalwanga, a student from the School of Commercial Industrial Art and Design, said the rain almost made her miss classes. “It was a bit heavy, I was still at the hostel when it started raining, I maneuvered through the downpour but arrived to class all drenched in water despite using an umbrella.”
Kato Mark, a Business Administration student, expressed frustration with the disruptions caused by the rain. “I rely on public transportation to get to campus, but the taxi delays caused by flooded roads are throwing off my schedule. It’s hard to stay on track when the weather is working against me.”
The continuing rain is causing frustration among students who rely on public transportation, with many reporting longer taxi delays. “These disruptions affect our study concentration levels,” they said.
Mr. Katambala Fred, a university official, has appealed to students to prioritize their safety while traveling to and from campus, consider alternative transportation methods, and reach out for support if needed. He also suggested the possibility of online lectures to minimize disruptions.
