Nkumba University’s Law Research Club has installed new leaders and launched a research paper titled “AI and the Law” during a ceremony held at Mpanga Library on Tuesday, 15th April 2025.
Andrew Mwine was sworn in as the new President, pledging to uphold the club’s guidelines and supplement what his predecessors have built over the years.
Outgoing leaders were recognized and awarded certificates as a token of appreciation. The launch of a research paper on AI’s potential to support human intelligence in law sought to draw the budding lawyers’ thoughts on embracing technological advancement, with the Dean noting that “change happens, but it must be continuous, and it’s only research that is the backbone of growth.
In his keynote speech, the Academic Registrar emphasized the importance of research in academic performance, urging the club to consider hosting symposiums for academic deliberation. “Think of a research symposium,” he said. “Performance of coursework depends on research.”
On the topic of AI, the Registrar noted that lawyers who fail to adapt to AI risk being replaced. “AI is a precursor, and we cannot avoid it,” he warned. “We have to adjust to understanding machine learning or deep learning algorithms for prediction purposes.”
The Registrar further noted that while AI can help develop assertive legal submissions, it should not replace human decision-making. “Allow AI to come up with predictions, but decision-making should remain ours,” he said. “Don’t let it deprive you of your human faculty of understanding.”
Counsel Witness Nabalende, the Dean School of Law, lauded the outgoing leaders, most especially Mwanje Gideon, for their exceptional service, noting that their efforts had contributed to an increase in the school’s enrollment numbers. “You have done exceptionally well, and we are indebted to you,” the Dean said. “A good leader makes leaders.”
The newly installed leaders will serve a one-year tenure, having assumed office on 1st April 2025.
