Tension flared up at Nabageleka hostel, Nkumba University, between supporters of Mawanda Derrick and Katende Muhammad, two former Guild Presidential aspirants, in the early morning hours of yesterday.
The incident involved Dralike Angel, a second-year law student and Mawanda supporter, and Lydia, a first-year law student and Katende supporter. According to Dralike, Katende’s supporters added Mawanda’s supporters to their WhatsApp group and started abusing them.
The situation escalated when Dralike discovered she was being discussed in the group. “They used you,” Dralike reportedly told Lydia, further alleging that Lydia must have slept with many male students to earn votes for Katende.
The argument turned violent, with Dralike and her friends banging on Lydia’s door, demanding she come out and fight. Lydia locked herself in her room to avoid confrontation.
Nansanga Hannah, the Law School MP, intervened, urging calm and suggesting they report the matter to the authorities. However, Dralike’s group insisted on handling the situation immediately.
Petra, a hostel resident, contradicted Dralike’s account, claiming Lydia was provoked and talked ill of Dralike and President Mawanda.
The incident highlights the deep divisions and tensions that can arise in the aftermath of student elections.
