Daniel Ngirabakunzi, the 2022 Nkumba University Guild Aspirant, has officially been nominated to contest for the Bufumbira North parliamentary seat in the forthcoming general elections.
Ngirabakunzi, who recently crossed from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to the Democratic Party (DP), was successfully nominated earlier this week ahead of the January 15, 2026, General elections.
Speaking shortly after his nomination, the youthful aspirant expressed confidence in his chances, saying his decision to join the race was inspired by the people of Bufumbira North who, he said, had long yearned for responsive leadership. “My decision to contest is a response to the demands by my people in Bufumbira North for better services,” Ngirabakunzi said. “The current leadership has totally done nothing to liberate, articulate and table the challenges faced by our people in Parliament. Therefore, a fresh revolutionary leadership structure is needed in Bufumbira and I’m ready to champion that.”
Ngirabakunzi’s entry into elective politics adds him to the growing list of Nkumba University alumni making strides in Uganda’s political arena. While at Nkumba, he was an active student leader who held several positions, including President of the School of Science (2022–2023) and General Secretary of the Nkumba NRM Chapter. He also contested for the Guild Presidency in the 2022–2023 academic year.
His defection from the NRM to the DP, he said, reflects a shift in his political ideology towards what he describes as “people-centered leadership.”
Ngirabakunzi’s nomination has already stirred excitement among his supporters, who believe his youthful energy and academic background will inject new life into the constituency’s representation.
The Bufumbira North Constituency, located in Kisoro District, is expected to attract several candidates as the 2026 general elections draw closer.
