Nkumba University’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chapter has endorsed Alinda Marvin as its flag bearer for the upcoming Guild Elections. Alinda, who previously held the title of Mr. Nkumba 2022-2023, was unopposed, a factor some political analysts believe could make him a less competitive candidate.

Alinda joined Nkumba University in 2022 to pursue a Diploma in Graphics Design and later advanced to a Bachelor’s degree in the same field in 2023. Arisingura Benson, Chairperson of the NRM Chapter and a former Guild Presidency candidate, expressed confidence in Alinda, stating that the party has addressed past shortcomings and is well-prepared to secure a victory this time.

Alinda, enthusiastic about the endorsement, emphasized the inclusivity of the NRM, saying, “I am here to prove that the NRM is not just for old people but also for us, the youth.” Currently, he is the only candidate backed by a political party, while his competitors, Mawanda Derrick and Katende Mohammed, are running as independents.

Esther Ajambo, a member of the Patriotic League Uganda, highlighted the advantages of political party support, noting that it provides resources and influence. However, she also raised concerns about the potential compromise of student leaders’ independence when backed by political parties.

Despite launching his campaign later than his opponents, Alinda is gaining traction, particularly within the School of Industrial Art and Design (SCIAD), which has not fielded a Guild Presidency candidate in years. The school has rallied behind him with the slogan, “If the government cannot go to SCIAD, then let SCIAD go to the government.” Alinda reassured students from other schools that his leadership would serve the entire university community.

Open-air campaigns are set to begin this month, and Alinda is determined to win over voters with promises of bold and transparent leadership.
