According to Makanga Jessy, there is alot of recklessness when it comes to managing plastic waste, plastics are littered anywhere anyhow and this will eventually return to haunt us in the future, it is on that basis that the group thought of an initiative that will mitigate this Hazzardous waste disposal around Kasenyi landing site.

“We have a big task a head and we must start now by ensuring encouraging communities to look at this as and entrepreneural opportunity, collecting and saving off already used plastics will help us minimize on the harm plastics wreck on our environment. ” Said Makanga

The team plans to plant plastic collection bins around Kisenyi landing site, 25×25 meters apart with stickers appealing to the general public to drop all plastic waste into these bins.

There will be peers within the landing site who will be trained on plastic waste vigilance more so those that may be eroded into the lake, the same peers are expected to empty the collection bins and pack the plastic waste into sacks.

This sack will be sold back to plastic companies for recycling with the aim of minimizing the amount of plastic waste buried into soil or eroded into the water sources.

The initiative immerged from the social fiction competitions for all Universities in central Uganda held on 2nd March 2023 at Kampala International University.

The element of waste management was convincing enough to earn the Nkumba University team 2 million Ugandan shillings cash prize after emerging as winners.

The competition was a social business design organised by the You Youth foundation and partners basing on the concept of social business as tailored by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Professor Muhammad Yunus through promoting the 3 zeros. which inciude,0 unemployment,0 poverty and 0 cabon emission .
