On Tuesday, April 2, 2025, Uganda Uncovered, a tours and travel agency, conducted a half-day training session for Nkumba University journalism students, equipping them with travel writing skills. The training, held at the Mpanga Library, attracted over 20 journalism students.
Julius Luwemba, a travel writing expert from Vision Group, led the training. He shared insights on how travel writing can open doors to unique opportunities, emphasizing the importance of thorough research and hands-on experience. “Travel writers are tourism motivators because they have unique angles for writing stories,” Luwemba said.
Luwemba encouraged students to start by telling stories from their own communities, highlighting the value of local storytelling. “You don’t have to go far. Even your neighborhood has stories worth telling,” he added.
The training also featured Terry Katende, a Digital Marketing trainer, who shared techniques on penetrating the digital space. Katende advised students to focus on creating content that appeals to the digital space and warned against using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to write stories.
The training was well-received by the students, who appreciated the knowledge and skills acquired. “I have been motivated to tell stories and build my own brand as a student,” said Susan Nampijja, a first-year student.
Mr. Nashonji Peter, the deputy Public Relations Officer at Nkumba University, encouraged students to apply the skills learned and submit original travel stories for publication.
This training is part of Uganda Uncovered’s ongoing efforts to build a generation of travel writing journalists who will tell Uganda’s tourism stories. This is the fifth year of the training, which targets university students.
