Uganda to Become Third African Nation to Build a Nuclear Power Plant

Uganda is set to become the third nation on the African Continent and the first in the East and Central Africa to set up a nuclear power plant only after South Africa and Egypt.

During the second African nuclear summit at speke Resort Munyonyo , His excellence the president of Uganda together with the Ministry of minerals and energy confirmed the development about the construction of the nuclear power plant which is expected to start soon with the help of a foreign company Korea nuclear company.

In a memorandum of understanding signed by the ministry of energy with the South Korean Company, the construction is estimated to cost up to around nine billion US dollars and to be completed by 2031 and producing an estimated 2000 megawatts.

South Africa was the first to set up a nuclear power plant ” The Korberg” nuclear plant which produces a number of 2000MW per annum.

This is located 30km north of the South African Capital and is operated by the south African national security supplier Eskom.

By 2026, Egypt will become the second nation to own a nuclear plant . The construction of this plant was started in July last year and expecting to start producing electricity by 2026.

This is estimated to cost around 28.75 us dollars estimated to produce a record breaking 4.8GW upon its completion .

Uganda’s nuclear power plant will be completed by 2031.

However Seven other countries to embark on construction of nuclear plants and expect to start getting electricity by mid and late 2030s.

These countries include Morocco,Algeria,Ghana ,Kenya,Nigeria ,Sudan and Tunisia.
