Nkumba University Dean of Students, Mr. Christopher Kimuli, has urged newly admitted students for the February 2026 intake to pursue academic excellence with confidence and discipline, saying the university is committed to shaping graduates with competence to outmatch their counterparts in the global job market.
Addressing hundreds of fresh students during orientation at the main campus, Mr. Kimuli said university education goes beyond lectures and examinations, but Nkumba University focuses on building confidence, creativity, and competence. “In administration, we want to prepare you to become confident individuals. So that, when you face an interview panel, you are able to present yourself with confidence, creativity, and high moral character,” Mr. Kimuli said.
He emphasized that while knowledge and technical skills are essential, employers today are increasingly looking for graduates who demonstrate integrity, innovation, and self-drive. “The University will give you knowledge and skills to compete in an increasingly competitive job market. But without character and competence, that knowledge will not take you far,” he added.
Mr. Kimuli reminded students that university life demands maturity, independence and responsibility. He urged them to focus on what is relevant to their academic and personal growth, and avoid distractions that could derail their ambitions. “Here, you are given space to grow. You must learn to be responsible, work together, and submit assignments as groups where required. University is not like secondary school; you must take charge of your learning,” he said.
He also encouraged students to remain engaged in university life beyond academics, noting that participation in leadership, cultural, and co-curricular activities helps build confidence and leadership skills.
Mr. Kimuli announced that the current student government’s term will end in April, and new leaders will be elected during the semester. He urged students to take part in the democratic process by voting and also availing themselves for leadership. “These elections belong to you, the students. Choose leaders who will guide and represent you well. Even after your first year, remain active in university life and leadership,” he said.
He, however, reminded students that only those who would have paid at least 20 per cent of tuition will be eligible to vote as stipulated in the Guild’s election regulations.
The Dean revealed that several student-centred activities have been scheduled for the semester, including the annual cultural gala set for April 18, where students from different backgrounds will showcase traditional dances and heritage.
The university, through the Guild Government, will also organize a medical camp with activities, including medical check-ups, to promote student well-being. In addition, Mr. Kimuli encouraged students to participate in the upcoming Mr. and Miss Nkumba University competition, describing it as a platform for confident, intelligent, and talented students to represent and market the university.
Nkumba University, one of Uganda’s oldest private universities, founded in 1994, has over the years positioned itself as a centre for academic excellence, leadership development, and holistic student growth. The institution admits students in multiple intakes each year, with orientation programs designed to prepare freshers for academic life, leadership participation, and responsible citizenship.
