Fresh students joining Nkumba University for the August 2026 Intake have been challenged to pursue their education with purpose, embrace technology responsibly, and cultivate entrepreneurial skills that will prepare them for success beyond graduation.
The call was made by Nkumba University Honorary Ambassador and entrepreneur Abraham Luzzi while addressing freshers during the ongoing orientation held at the University’s Mpanga Library on Wednesday, 5th August 2026.
Speaking candidly about his own entrepreneurial journey, Luzzi encouraged the freshers to view their university education as an investment with eminent power to transform their lives and communities. “University is not just about earning a degree. It is about acquiring skills that distinguish you from everyone else in society. Ask yourself whether the knowledge you gain here can help you solve problems, create businesses and employ others,” said Luzzi.
Drawing from his experience in the gold trade, Luzzi revealed that the business and logistics knowledge he acquired from Nkumba University laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial success. “I learnt how to use the internet professionally to identify markets, connect buyers and sellers, and build business relationships across borders. Those skills enabled me to close my first international gold transaction, which earned me 120,000 US dollars,” he narrated.
He urged students to embrace digital platforms as tools for innovation and business rather than mere entertainment. “Technology is one of the greatest resources available to you today. If you misuse social media by following distractions instead of opportunities, you will miss out on the exposure and networks that can change your life,” he said.
Luzzi further advised students to develop personal brands and become job creators rather than depending solely on formal employment after graduation. “Create your own platforms, market your skills and build businesses from the knowledge you acquire here. Uganda needs graduates who can innovate and create opportunities for others,” he noted.
Commending Nkumba University for maintaining academic standards, Luzzi applauded the institution’s commitment to producing competent graduates through quality education. “This is one of the universities where quality education is taken seriously. The integrity of your qualification matters because it reflects the knowledge and skills you possess,” he said.
Beyond academics, the businessman encouraged the freshers to nurture meaningful relationships, respect diversity and support one another throughout their university journey. “You will meet people from different backgrounds who may become lifelong friends, business partners or future leaders. Learn to live together, help each other and build lasting networks,” he advised.
The address formed part of Nkumba University’s August 2026 Freshers’ Orientation, a programme designed to acquaint new students with academic life, university policies, digital learning systems and student support services.
Earlier in the orientation, officials from the eLearning Department introduced students to the University’s Learning Management System (LMS), student portal, digital learning pedagogy and procedures for accessing the institution’s free Eduroam Wi-Fi network.
