A member of staff from Nkumba University has commenced an international academic mobility programme at FH JOANNEUM – University of Applied Sciences in Austria.
Amos Ronald Kalukusu, a lecturer from the School of Sciences’ Department of Applied Sciences, began his staff mobility and exchange programme on Monday, July 6, 2026, with an intensive Professional German Language course tailored to support international academic engagement and cross-border collaboration.
The specialized programme brings together participants from different parts of the world, including Uganda, Ukraine and the Dominican Republic, creating a multicultural learning environment where participants build professional networks while strengthening intercultural communication skills.
While sharing his first-day experience, Kalukusu described the opportunity as an important step towards expanding academic collaboration and enhancing professional growth. “This programme offers much more than language acquisition. It provides an opportunity to establish meaningful academic relationships with colleagues from different countries, exchange knowledge and explore collaborative approaches to addressing global public health and higher education challenges,” he said.
Adding that interacting with professionals from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds would enrich his teaching, research, and community engagement upon his return to Uganda. “The diversity within this cohort creates a unique platform for learning from one another’s experiences. These interactions will undoubtedly contribute to stronger international partnerships and open new avenues for collaborative research and innovation,” Kalukusu noted.
Beyond the language programme, participants are also being introduced to several flagship academic programmes and innovation initiatives at FH JOANNEUM that are designed to address contemporary global challenges through applied research, technology, sustainability and interdisciplinary learning.
University officials say the exposure is expected to strengthen institutional linkages while creating opportunities for future joint research projects, staff exchanges and student mobility initiatives between the two institutions.
The exchange also reflects the increasing emphasis that universities worldwide are placing on international collaboration as a catalyst for improving teaching, research and innovation in an increasingly interconnected world.

These collaborations have facilitated student and staff mobility, joint research, curriculum development and capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing the University’s global competitiveness.
