The Nkobazambogo Association for Baganda students at Nkumba University has stood the test of time, fulfilling its founding objectives: fostering unity, promoting Buganda culture, and nurturing leadership qualities.
Over the years, the association has grown stronger through the dedication of its leaders and members. It actively engages in activities that serve the Kabaka of Buganda, such as the “Kabaka Birthday Run,” conferences at Mengo, and other initiatives. Under the capable leadership of Chairperson Kawombe Spyridon and his team, the association continues to thrive.
Ssentogo Richard, the Speaker of Baganda Nkobazambogo, elaborated on the association’s principles and benefits: “Baganda Nkobazambogo is committed to cultivating moral values, cultural awareness, and financial development among its members, aiming for excellence.” The association unites Baganda students at Nkumba University, fostering a sense of togetherness. One of its key roles is to develop competent leaders who can guide others effectively.
This leadership goal is evident in the guild aspirants, who are often members of the association and proudly represent the Baganda clan. As Ssentogo highlighted, “When we talk about leadership development, we can look at past guild presidents. In the last election, Kaziba Noah, a Nkobazambogo member, emerged victorious. This time, we have Mwanda Derrick, Katende Muhammed, and Kamoga from the association competing as well.”
Additionally, the association provides its members with opportunities to visit the Buganda Kingdom and interact with its ministers, gaining valuable insights and deeper understanding of their culture. “These visits allow us to connect with Buganda officials, enhancing our knowledge and cultural ties,” the Speaker shared. These interactions build connections and social capital, benefiting members in meaningful ways.
The association also supports students during challenging times, offering physical, emotional, and financial assistance to members who experience personal losses. It fosters a sense of shared experience, celebrating joys and overcoming difficulties together.
Traveling is another important aspect of Baganda Nkobazambogo. Members visit various locations to appreciate Uganda’s culture and natural beauty at affordable rates. In line with the Kabaka’s environmental vision, they plant trees during their journeys to promote sustainability.
Tamia, the Deputy Speaker of Baganda Nkobazambogo, explained, “We organize tours to different regions of Uganda, including central, east, and west, exploring historical sites like the Equator and Kisubi Tombstones.” She emphasized the importance of active participation, urging members to attend meetings held every Thursday at 4:00 PM. “By doing so, we strengthen our unity and work towards our goals, as our motto states, ‘OBUMU GEMANYI’—Togetherness is the power.”
Baganda Nkobazambogo is a student association at Nkumba University dedicated to fostering unity, preserving Buganda culture, and nurturing future leaders. The association serves as a platform for Baganda students to connect, embrace their heritage, and collaborate on initiatives that benefit both their community and the Buganda Kingdom. Through various activities such as cultural visits, tree-planting campaigns, and leadership development programs, Baganda Nkobazambogo empowers its members with moral values, social capital, and opportunities for growth. The association is also known for its unwavering support to members during times of difficulty, ensuring a strong bond of solidarity. Guided by its motto, “OBUMU GEMANYI” (Togetherness is the power), Baganda Nkobazambogo continues to play a vital role in shaping responsible and culturally-aware leaders.
