Nkumba University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, has called on new students to remain committed to their academic goals, warning against distractions that could derail their studies.

Speaking during the freshers’ orientation on Friday afternoon, Prof. Lubega assured students that his office remained open for engagement, but encouraged them to first make use of the Dean of Students’ office before seeking his indulgence. “Sometimes I will come to you and listen to you,” he said. “However, the Dean of Students has been delegated to support you in every way; engage him first; he is there to help you.”

The Vice Chancellor also urged the newly admitted learners to be mindful of their well-being, citing a tragic incident involving a student who took her own life after being dumped by her boyfriend. Prof. Lubega stressed that while social life was part of university, academics should remain the top priority. “I’m not saying you shouldn’t have fun,” he said, “but I want to see you at the end of your three or four years rejoicing at graduation. That should be your focus.”

The Vice Chancellor welcomed all new entrants, making special mention of those from abroad. Spotting two students from Belgium, “They have come from very far to have their studies with us. Please support them because they are in a new country,” he said.

In a symbolic gesture of commitment, the freshers were asked to take an academic oath pledging to abide by the university’s rules and uphold its reputation. “I will attend all my lectures, write all my coursework, do a research project, and sit all exams to achieve my academic goals. I shall keep and abide by all university rules and regulations, always do my best to protect the intellectual property rights and bring honor and goodwill to the university, so help me God.” Students declared in unison.

Prof. Lubega reminded them that the oath would be kept on record. “If one day we catch you going against the code of conduct, we shall retrieve that paper and remind you that you committed to abide by it,” he cautioned.
