Nkumba University has called for bids from competent and experienced companies to undertake three major infrastructure projects aimed at improving student welfare, learning facilities, and energy sustainability at its main campus in Entebbe.

In a public notice, the University Secretary, Mr. Francis Ssengendo, announced plans to develop a Student Accommodation Complex (Mpoobe Hostels Village), a Multi-Purpose Teaching Complex (SCIAD Complex), and a Hybrid Solar Energy System.

Mr. Ssengendo said the projects are part of the university’s long-term strategy to modernize its infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for learning, research, and innovation. “We are inviting competent companies with the necessary capacity and experience to express interest in undertaking these projects,” he said. “This is a strategic investment in the university’s growth and the future of higher education in Uganda.”

The first project the Mpoobe Hostels Village will provide modern, safe, and sustainable accommodation for students. Once complete, the complex will house up to 5,250 students.

According to the call for bids, Phase One will involve the construction of two blocks with a total capacity of 1,500 beds. The hostels will feature study areas, common rooms, recreational and sanitary facilities, and shared kitchen and dining spaces, all designed to improve students’ living and learning experiences. “This is not just about accommodation,” Mr. Ssengendo explained. “It is about creating a holistic environment where students can live, study, and grow comfortably within the university setting.”

The second project, the Multi-Purpose Teaching Complex (SCIAD Complex), will provide state-of-the-art learning and research spaces. Designed to be both functional and visually appealing, the new facility will serve as a central hub for academic excellence and innovation. “The SCIAD Complex is envisioned to redefine how we deliver higher education, blending functionality with design to foster creativity and engagement,” Mr. Ssengendo notes.

The complex will support advanced teaching methods and collaborative research, aligning with Nkumba University’s mission to nurture transformative leaders and innovators.

The third initiative, a Hybrid Solar Energy System, will advance Nkumba University’s sustainability agenda by cutting reliance on the national grid.

The system will involve the design, installation, and commissioning of modular hybrid solar power units, each producing 100 KVA. Each module will sustain connected loads for up to 12 hours and recharge fully within four hours using solar energy or three hours using hydroelectric power.

The project will include installation of all supporting infrastructure including battery racks, anchoring systems, cables, and integration with the university’s power grid. “This project is about sustainability and energy independence,” Mr. Ssengendo emphasized. “It will significantly reduce the university’s reliance on the national grid while promoting the use of renewable energy.”
