Nkumba University students showcased their growing technological prowess after emerging third overall in the Cyber Hackathon and Cyber Security Symposium hosted by Milima Security at the IT Innovation Hub, Nakawa, on October 27th and 28th, 2025.
The two-day event drew participation from leading institutions including ISBAT University, Kyambogo University, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Cavendish University, and several private cyber security companies. The challenge aimed to strengthen cyber awareness and equip young innovators with practical digital defense skills.
Operating under the theme “Tokola Error” meaning don’t make a mistake, the Nkumba team impressed judges with their technical precision and creative approach to tackling simulated cyber threats, earning Shs500,000 in prize money.
Nkumba’s team leader, Mr. Kidima Joel, who is also contesting for the presidency of the School of Computing and Informatics, won the 20-question timed quiz, walking away with an MTN MoMo-branded umbrella and notebook.
Speaking after the event, Kidima said the competition was both inspiring and eye-opening. “We learned the role of employee awareness training in strengthening cyber security, and explored how Artificial Intelligence is transforming threat detection,” he said.
Adding that “this was a great opportunity for us students to connect with industry experts and apply classroom knowledge to real-world cyber challenges.”
Organizers from Milima Security commended the participating universities for their innovation and enthusiasm, emphasizing the need for continuous investment in cyber education.
The annual Cyber Hackathon and Symposium brings together students, academics, and private sector professionals to discuss emerging threats, data protection, and the future of AI in digital security.
Nkumba University’s performance, according to event coordinators, reflects a growing culture of innovation and excellence among Uganda’s next generation of cyber security professionals.
