Nkumba University’s Freshers’ Bazaar has taken on an intellectual twist as Action for Liberty and Economic Development (ALED Africa) is set to unveil a book review challenge aimed at fostering a culture of reading among students.
The initiative, which officially kicks off with reading simulations on Friday, August 29, 2025, between 10 am and 2 pm at the Student Parliament, seeks to encourage students to form reading groups, share perspectives, and build communities of knowledge.
Speaking to Nkumba University News, ALED Africa’s Executive Director, Mr. Mugabi John, said the program is designed to spark intellectual curiosity among university students.“We want to establish book clubs and reading groups where students can discuss books and exchange ideas. This will create a campus environment that values intellectual curiosity and encourages discussion and debate,” he explained.
According to Mr. Mugabi, participating students stand a chance to win cash prizes, books, event tickets, and scholarships for workshops happening across the continent.“The challenge is not just about reading; it is about empowering students to think critically, express themselves through writing, podcasts, or blogs, and to become part of a larger movement of intellectualism in Africa,” he added.
Organizers have particularly appealed to journalism students to join Friday’s reading simulations, which will serve as a practical experience in critical thinking and communication.“We especially seek active journalism students to be part of this exercise. It will give them both exposure and the opportunity to showcase their skills in environmental analysis and communication strategy,” Mr. Mugabi said.
Students are also encouraged to visit the ALED Africa stall at the ongoing Bazaar to pick up a book and register for the competition.“Grab yourself a book at our stall and you could walk away with exclusive prizes. This is an opportunity to invest in yourself while also being part of a vibrant intellectual community,” Mr. Mugabi urged.
ALED Africa is a Uganda-based think tank championing libertarian ideals since 2017. Through education, outreach, and research, it promotes individual liberty, free markets, and sound policy. The organization has built a national library, fostered University-based chapters, and regularly hosts signature events like the Africa Liberty Camp to engage and empower youth across the continent.
