Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s death yesterday 8th September 2022 at around 8pm.
The Queen breathed her last at Balmoral Castle in her Scottish Highlands estate. Her death ursherd in Britain’s new monarch, King Charles III.
In east London, people looked at their phones in shock as they processed and relayed news to loved ones. In a BBC interview, William Sawtell, 28, a music production student, said he was unprepared for the news even though he is apathetic toward the monarchy. “We have always admired the queen,” he said.
Anne and David O’Brien, from the northern town of Jarron, have vivid memories of 56 years ago, when aged 4 and 6 they saw the queen, who came to inaugurate a tunnel in their town and waved to them from her car wearing a bright blue dress. “She brought such dignity and strength to this country,” said teary Ms. O’Brien while appearing on BBC News.
The official Twitter account for Prince William, King Charles III’s eldest son, has been updated. William is now the heir to the throne. This is in reflection of the couple’s apparent change in titles, and now refers to them as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge. The pair were previously known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but now appear to have taken the additional title that previously belonged to Charles and his wife, Camilla.
Prince Harry arrived Thursday evening at Balmoral Castle to join members of the royal family as they mourn Queen Elizabeth II, his grandmother, according to the BBC.
U.S President, Joe Biden on Thursday ordered that the American flag be flown half-must at the White House, federal buildings and embassies around the world until sunset on the day of interment for Queen Elizabeth. In a proclamation, Mr. Biden wrote that, ” the queen was a states woman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock Alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States.”
The United Nations Security Council observed a minute of silence with diplomats rising in honor of Queen Elizabeth II before convening an emergency meeting on Ukraine. Barbara Woodward, Britain’s ambassador to the U.N., said the queen’s “extraordinary service fostered peace and friendship worldwide.”
Former U.S President, Barack Obama conveyed his condolences via Twitter, “Like so many of you, Michelle and I are grateful to have witnessed Her Majesty’s dedicated leadership, and we are awed by her legacy of tireless, dignified public service. Our thoughts are with her family and the people of the United Kingdom at this difficult time”.
The queen’s death brings in a moment of reckoning for Britain, the end of the world iconic figure who served as a living link to the glories of World War II and presided over Britain through its fitful adjustment from both a post-colonial and post-imperial era to its bitter divorce from the European Union.
Born in 1926, Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne on 6, February 1952, after the death of her father, King George VI however, her coronation took place in 1953 when she was 27.
