Nkumba University’s Beach Boys delivered a formidable performance on home turf with a convincing 3–1 victory over Kyambogo University in a high-intensity Group C encounter, keeping their qualification hopes alive in the university football championship.
From the opening whistle, the hosts showed attacking intent, setting a high tempo that forced the visitors onto the defensive. Kyambogo looked organized at the back in the early exchanges, but Nkumba’s relentless pressure eventually paid dividends.
The breakthrough arrived in the 12th minute when Kavuma Abbey calmly slotted home after connecting with Kaweesi’s perfectly curled delivery, sending the home crowd into celebration and giving the Beach Boys a deserved lead.
Nkumba continued to pile pressure on their opponents and were rewarded again in the 18th minute after Kyambogo’s defense faltered inside the penalty area. A mistimed challenge by the Buffaloes’ center back handed the hosts a penalty opportunity.
Team captain Ismael Lubega stepped up and confidently converted from the spot to double Nkumba’s advantage.
The Beach Boys were far from done. Their attacking rhythm remained fluid and purposeful, and in the 25th minute Lubega returned to the scoresheet to grab his second goal of the afternoon with a powerful strike that left Kyambogo’s goalkeeper with no chance, stretching the lead to 3–0.
The result, at that stage, looked significant for Nkumba’s qualification ambitions, especially with other Group C results being closely monitored, including fixtures played in Buwambo.
Nkumba took their comfortable 3–0 lead into the halftime break, having put together one of their most clinical first-half displays of the campaign.
The second half saw a more determined Kyambogo side emerge from the dressing room. The visitors pushed forward with urgency, clearly intent on changing the narrative of the contest. However, Nkumba’s backline remained disciplined, frustrating the Buffaloes’ attacking efforts for long periods.
After several attempts, Kyambogo finally found a breakthrough, exploiting a weakness on Nkumba’s right flank to score a consolation goal and briefly revive their hopes.
The goal sparked renewed energy from the Buffaloes, who pressed aggressively in search of another. Despite the late pressure, Nkumba showed defensive resilience and game management maturity to hold on and secure an important 3–1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Nkumba University captain and brace hero Ismael Lubega emphasized the team’s awareness of what was at stake. “It was a high-intensity game and we were aware of the magnitude of what was at stake,” Lubega said. “We had to give everything to make sure we win. The plan was to score as many goals as possible in the opening minutes and I am happy we executed it well.”
The result leaves Nkumba University and Kyambogo University tied on seven points each in Group C, with an identical goal difference, setting up a tense finish to the group stages.
Elsewhere in the group, YMCA shared the spoils with ISBAT University. The draw proved enough for YMCA to secure qualification after moving to seven points. ISBAT and Busitema University remain at the bottom of the standings.
Nkumba University has traditionally been one of the competitive sides in Ugandan university football, often known for producing technically gifted players through its sports programs. Their football legacy within inter-university competitions has been built on disciplined defending and quick attacking transitions, qualities that were evident in this latest victory.
Kyambogo University, on the other hand, has equally enjoyed a strong football tradition, with previous campaigns marked by physical play and tactical organization. Encounters between the two institutions have increasingly developed into competitive affairs, reflecting the growing standard of university football in Uganda.
With the group stage nearing its climax, Nkumba’s latest triumph not only keeps their hopes alive but also reinforces their reputation as one of the tournament’s most determined sides this season.
