Nkumba University’s football and volleyball teams have received a major boost ahead of their upcoming competitions, courtesy of Derrick Mawanda, a guild presidential hopeful.
Mawanda, commonly known as the “public lawyer,” donated a full set of jerseys to the Nkumba University Volleyball Girls Team (NUVC), Nkumba Volleyball Boys Team (Navy Team), and a training kit to the Beach Boys (Nkumba University Football Team).
According to Kennedy Ssewakambo, captain of the football team, the donation was made on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Mawanda, a third-year law student, said the teams needed logistical support and a boost, which was identified during stakeholders’ meetings held last year.
“In trying to solve the challenges faced by our students, especially those who market our university through sports and games, my campaign team engaged stakeholders to find solutions,” Mawanda explained. “These donations are some of the fruits of those deliberations.”
Mawanda, who has been following the university’s sports teams, identified logistical challenges that needed support. “I believe our sportsmen and women need everyone’s support as they compete against other universities,” he added.
As part of his campaign strategy, Mawanda aims to bridge the gap between the university leadership and sports teams, while promoting team spirit and marketing Nkumba University through sports.
Mawanda Derrick is a third-year law student at Nkumba University, pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. He is an active member of Rotary International, serving at both club and district levels, and has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow having donated over $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
Mawanda’s professional affiliations include membership in the Uganda Law Society’s Food and Nutrition Cluster. He is also a self-made entrepreneur, having founded Mawick Investments Ltd, and a passionate human rights activist committed to leadership that prioritizes the interests of the people.
Last year, Mawanda started laying strategies as he showed interest in vying for the coveted Guild President seat in the forthcoming April 2025 Guild elections. If elected, he will succeed the current Guild President, Kasimba Noah.
Kamoga Ronald and Katende Muhammad are the two other Guild Presidential hopefuls set to lock horns for a grip on the seat.
