The much-anticipated Inter-University Games commenced on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

Nkumba University emerged as the early frontrunner, securing victories in all five sports disciplines contested on the opening day.

The Beach Boys displayed prowess with a convincing 2-0 triumph over Busitema University, marking Nkumba University’s maiden triumph. The momentum continued as the Nkumba University ladies’ football team secured a 1-0 victory against Kampala University. Subsequent victories in Netball, Volleyball, and Basketball further solidified Nkumba University’s dominance in games played on day one.

Day two started with the Nkumba University Netball team overwhelming newcomers, Soroti University in a commanding 86-21 victory. However, the men’s football team faced a setback against UCU after a 16th-minute red card disrupted their game strategy loosing 1-0.

Dr. Suleiman Bbosa, the Head Coach-Nkumba University, attributed his team’s downfall to an early red card.

“We conceded an early red card and attempts to regain control of the game became futile even after saving a penalty, the opponent utilized numerical advantage and penetrated our defense so easily and capitalized on a loose ball.” Said Dr. Bbosa

Coach Bbosa remains optimistic that a win against Makerere University is imminently a do or die.

The Beach Girls, on the other hand, settled for a draw against UCU Ladies. Nkumba later registered another loss in a Volleyball match against UCU.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega travelled to Uganda Christian University where he assured athletes of the University’s support, “Keep pressing, we are here for you.” Said Prof. Jude

Prof. Jude also commended Uganda Christian University for stepping in as substitute hosts, acknowledging their swift action in filling the void left by the initial hosts. In addition, he appealed to the government to invest substantially in university sports citing the role of universities in talent development and the dire need for improved sports infrastructure.

Whereas there have been accusations and claims of teams fixing in non bonified players, organizers say, everything is in place to deter such bad vices, “We have put every measure in place to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated sports event.” Said Vicent Kisenyi, the Chairperson Organizing committee.

The Inter-University Games are organized by the Association of Uganda’s University Sports.

This year, the biennial event will see more than 24 universities, engaging in a diverse array of 16 sports disciplines. Notably, the inclusion of Bodybuilding, Dance Sport, Bridge game, and Tug of War adds a new feel to the dynamic competition.
