Nkumba University’s Directorate of Postgraduate Studies and Research, on Friday, 11th July 2025, held this year’s 10th PhD seminar at Mpanga Library, marking the final step in the seminar series for the August 2024 PhD cohort.
The seminar brought together a diverse group of doctoral candidates poised to transition into the research phase of their PhD journey. The cohort comprises of prominent names including the Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Nabbaja Robinah, CPA Baker Ssekito, Bwesingye Obrine, Lukwago Ronald, Akiringa Busuku, March Nuel, Masembe Paul Amari, Kakuru Benard, Abaho Jane, Business Joan, Abiga Dracur, Akundane Moses, Mukwaya Ronald, Peter Antony, Jimmy Ladu, Richard Male, and Caroline Paounds, among others, all of whom were awarded certificates signifying the successful completion of their seminar series.
Over the years, the seminar sessions were facilitated by a team of distinguished academics, including Prof. Wilson Monde, Prof. Orach Meza, Prof. Samsung Omuudu Otengei, Prof. Jude Lubega, Prof. Solomon Asiimwe, Dr. Frank Pio Kiyingi, and Dr. Charles Edaku.
In one of the final presentations, Prof. Samsung Omuudu Otengei delved into the intricacies of scholarly writing and academic publishing. His talk, though unconventional in delivery, challenged candidates to embrace the complexity of research and remain authentic in their academic exploration.
“You know, when you’re out there investigating, your findings have to make sense in both theory and real-life practice,” Prof. Omuudu said. “Sometimes, you’ll discover a relationship where others haven’t. That’s how research evolves, by building and challenging what is already known.”
He stressed the importance of context in academic research, encouraging students to ground their work in relevant experiences and variables. “In the real world, theories don’t always apply as cleanly as textbooks suggest. That’s why your interpretation must reflect what’s happening on the ground,” he added, in a candid yet thought-provoking reflection that drew murmurs of agreement across the room.

While his delivery was riddled with pauses, philosophical musings, and metaphorical anecdotes, his message was clear: “Research must speak to reality, not just literature.”
Prof. Solomon Asiimwe, Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research, took a moment to highlight the gender diversity in this cohort, noting that it had the highest number of female candidates ever recorded at Nkumba University’s PhD level.
“This speaks volumes about the inclusivity and the growing trust scholars have in Nkumba’s doctoral programs,” Prof. Asiimwe said.
The Academic Registrar commended the candidates for their resilience. “A PhD journey is one of endurance, and you have shown admirable persistence. The work ahead will demand more, but you have built a strong foundation,” he said.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Jude Lubega, the Vice Chancellor, expressed gratitude to the candidates for choosing Nkumba University and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting them throughout their research journey.
“I know it took you time to analyse where to go for your PhD. We don’t take your decision for granted,” Prof. Lubega said. “You are done with your seminar series. Please go back and prepare for the next level of your journey. Be rest assured of our support.”
The 10th PhD seminar is a pivotal academic requirement at Nkumba, marking the official transition from coursework and seminars to the development of research proposals and eventual fieldwork.
Among the candidates is the Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabanjja, Uganda’s Prime Minister, whose continued academic journey serves as an inspiration to many. Having earned a Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation two years ago, her enrollment in this program is an attestation to a strong commitment to lifelong learning and academic excellence.
As the day drew to a close, the candidates gathered at the Vice Chancellor’s gardens for a celebratory moment marked by cake-cutting and a cocktail dinner.
With seminars now behind them, the candidates will embark on the next phase: Research. It is a journey of inquiry, discovery, and contribution to the expanding body of global knowledge.
