The Nkumba University Law Society held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce the upcoming Professor Kakooza Memorial tournament, scheduled for Friday, September 27th.
According to Disaan Prosper, Minister of Sporlawat Law School, this will be done in commemoration of the late Prof. Joseph Kakooza, the brain behind the establishment of Law School.
“We are proud to host this tournament in honor of the late Prof. Joseph Kakooza, the founder of our Law School,” said Disan Prosper,
Dissan revealed that Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude Lubega, will be the there to officate the much anticipated tournament.
“Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, who will be our Chief Guest.” Adding that, “This event would not have been possible without the support of our .”
The tournament, organized by the law school’s 19th government, promises an exciting lineup of activities, including football, netball, draft games, and more.
“We have prepared extensively for this event, and we are confident that it will be a success,” Prosper assured. “The winners will receive significant awards, and we encourage all participants to demonstrate their skills.”
The 19th government has also donated jerseys to the Law Society team, demonstrating their commitment to supporting the society’s sports initiatives.
Kibugo Fahad, leader of the fourth-year team and defending champions, expressed gratitude to the 19th government for their preparations. “We are determined to emerge victorious once again,” Fahad said confidently.
The President of the Law Society urged everyone to participate in the tournament, emphasizing its significance in commemorating Prof. Kakooza’s legacy.
“Prof. Kakooza’s vision for our law school has shaped who we are today,” the President said. “This tournament is the truest attestation to his engraved impact to not only our schoolbut the entireUniversity.”
The Professor Kakooza Memorial tournament has become an annual tradition, celebrating the life and contributions of the late professor who established Nkumba University’s Law School in 2005.
About Professor Joseph Kakooza?
Professor Kakooza became an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda in January 1969 before going on to become the founding Dean of the Faculty of Law at Makerere University in 1970.
In 1973, President Idi Amin appointed Professor Kakooza as a Judge of the High Court. He however served on the bench for only two years, resigning in 1975 to return to part time teaching.
In 1975, he was appointed First Commissioner for Law Reform and in 1978, he became President of the Uganda Industrial Court, a position he held until 1981.
In 1984, he became the first Professor of Law in Uganda and held the Deanship position at Makerere University for a second time until 1999.
He was also instrumental in the establishment of Uganda Martyrs’ University at Nkozi as well as the Law School at Nkumba University, where he was founding Dean.
In 2000, he became the Acting Chairperson of the Uganda Law Reform Commission and was confirmed as Chairman two years later. He retired from the Law Reform Commission in 2011.
Born in 1930 in Kitovu, Nnume village in Masaka District, Kakooza was awed one day as a young boy when he came across a High Court Judge.
The site of the fully robed Judge – red gown and white wig inclusive, was so intimidating that the young Kakooza decided that he would one day become a Judge.
In the late 1940s’ he went through St. Henry’s College Kitovu and St. Mary’s College Kisubi, with the likes of Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, the former Democratic Party President and Henry Kajura, the the former Public Service Minister as his contemporaries.
He breathed his last in October 2012 leaving behind his wife, Margaret Kakooza, five children and sixteen grand children.
