President Yoweri Museveni has sacked three senior officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) following a scathing report from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) on the devastating Kiteezi landfill collapse.
The dismissed officials include Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director, Engineer David Luyimbazi, the Deputy Executive Director, and Dr. Daniel Okello, the Director of Public Health.
The trio’s exit comes amidst mounting public outrage over the August 10th disaster that claimed dozens of lives and left hundreds homeless.
According to sources, the IGG’s report exposed glaring oversight and negligence by the KCCA leadership, prompting President Museveni to take drastic action.
Investigations also revealed that KCCA officials had been warned about the impending danger at the Kiteezi landfill, but failed to take decisive action. The report highlighted a lack of urgency in mobilizing resources to prevent the disaster and inadequate emergency preparedness.
“The KCCA leadership’s inaction led to unacceptable loss of life and property,” said Jackson Opio.
” Such gross negligence in public service should never be tolerated.” He added.
The Public Service Commission will advertise the vacant positions, with new appointments to be made within three months.
In the interim, the Minister for Kampala will advise on temporary appointments to ensure uninterrupted KCCA operations.
A thorough investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department will also focus on criminal negligence.
