The Week In A Glance

In a quick dossier, I try to reconstruct and reminisce on the big stories of the week. A number of events made it to the headlines from within the University, to National, regional and the international sphere.

The week started on a low with Former Guild Presidential aspirant, Arthur Andweniho’s election Petition thwarted early Monday. Court cited the petitioner’s failure to comply with article 25 (3) of The Guild Constitution which demands that the petition be lodged within 48 hours after Guild elections.

Same day the hamble servant, President-Elect Toka Victor was sworn in as the 27th Guild President of Nkumba University.

Members of parliament were sworn-in on 8th November, Parliament immediately constituted and both the speaker and his Deputy elected. The election also saw Nkumba University NRM Chapter stalwart, Enoth Kakye clinch Speakership.

Nkumba University’s innaugural “Dine For Learning” fundraising dinner continues to excite well wishers, the Alumni community and students following date confirmation with many looking forward to dinning for a cause.

Nkumba Marines triumphed over Entebbe Archers with a 95-72 win. The win boosts their playoffs campaign.

At National level, Uganda successfully launched its first ever satellite, PearlAfricaSat-1, aboard an American spaceship. Ugandan Scientists designed and oversaw the launch as they stamped their names into the books of History.

Since the Ebola Outbreak in September, Uganda has registered 135 cases with 53 deaths due to the deadly disease.

In the Neighboring Tazania, a fisherman in his early 20s woke up to an overnight heroism after he broke into the Precision Aircraft wreckage that had plugged into lake Victoria saving over 20 Passengers trapped inside.

Later, the youngster was honored by an appointment to join the Tanzanian Forces as directed by President Samia Suhulu with an additional 1,000,000 Tanzanian Shillings presidential hand shake.

On the international stretch Ukraine regained Kherson city following the withdrawal of Russian army from the city they had occupied since March.

US Mid term results have given Democrats new lead with 50 seats against th Republican’s 49 in the upper chamber of the US Congress. Analysts have intimated that even if Republicans win the remaining Senate race in Georgia, Vice-President Kamala Harris will be able to cast a tie-breaking vote.

In Football, the English premiere league Title Contenders and table leaders, Arsenal showed prowess following a 2-Nil win against Wolves hours after their closest rivals, Manchester city suffered a humiliating 1-2 loss in the rough of Brentford.
