The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results, revealing a significant increase in candidature.

A total of 141,996 candidates registered for the 2024 UACE examination, a 28.4% increase from the 110,566 candidates in 2023.

“This is a very significant increase in candidature compared to previous years,” said Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Secretary.

The increase in candidature was largely driven by males, who accounted for 53.1% (16,695) of the increased number.

According to Mr. Odongo, the increase in candidature could be attributed to the change in admission criteria for primary school teachers.

The number of examination centers also increased by 154 (7.3%) from 2,101 in 2023 to 2,255 in 2024.

Of the total candidates, 61,957 (43.6%) were females, while 80,039 (56.4%) were males.

The UNEB report showed notable improvements in performance in economics, literature in English, physics, and biology.

However, Entrepreneurship Education, Christian Religious Education, Geography, Mathematics, Agriculture, and Chemistry saw significant drops in levels of performance.

The report also highlighted the persistent gap in performance between Science subjects and Humanities.

“In the Humanities, the problems continue to be poor interpretation of questions due to misunderstanding of the key concepts that determine the expected responses,” revealed Dan Odongo.

Cases of malpractice remained low, with 39 reported out of the 2,255 centers.

In accordance with Section 5(2) (b) of the UNEB Act, Cap 259, results from the 39 centers will be withheld, pending completion of investigations.

The UNEB Executive Secretary urged candidates to collect their results from their respective schools.

“We urge all candidates to collect their results from their schools. We also remind them that the results are available online,” he said.
