To enhance the virtual learning experience for students, Nkumba University has concluded an 8-day eLearning training for over 200 academic staff members.
The training, which commenced on February 28th, was closed today, 12th March 2025, at Kampala Campus, where approximately 50 academic staff members were equipped with the latest eLearning tools and software, expected to improve their digital skills.
According to Mr. John William Otim, Senior Deputy Academic Registrar, the training is a crucial step towards implementing the university’s eLearning policy.
“We are heading in the right direction with our eLearning policy implementation which dictates that at least 30% of teaching and learning must be disseminated online. This training will enable us to achieve this goal and enrich the online learning experience for our students,” Mr. Otim explained.
He further warned of dire repercussions for those not embarrassing the implementation process.
“Ignorance of the law is no excuse. We expect all academic staff to embrace this initiative and make use of the resources provided,” Mr. Otim cautioned.

He revealed that the university had previously been given free internet of up to 100 Mbps through the Cyber School-Mastercard Foundation eLearning Initiative Uganda, but this was scrapped due to underutilization.
“We can have this decision reversed if academic staff can aggressively embrace the eLearning initiative,” he reassured staff.
Mr. Joseph Lwevuze, the Nkumba University eLearning officer expressed his delight at the enthusiasm shown by academic staff during the training and thanked the Office of the Academic Registrar for taking the lead in training staff.
Since 2022, the Cyber School-Mastercard Foundation eLearning Initiative has been supporting Nkumba University’s eLearning department through capacity building, training of staff, digitalizing content, and training students on how to navigate the learning management system.
The partnership has also resulted in the donation of a fully equipped state-of-the-art content digitalization hub, internet connectivity, and assistive devices for students with disabilities.
