“The state-of-the-art Specialist Centre at Lubaga Hospital will offer modern transplant services, over 25 specialized and super-specialized medical services, affluent in-patient-wing and private outpatient services.” The hospital tweeted.

This comes days after the Ugandan parliament passed the Uganda Human Organ Donation and Transplant Bill 2021.

If ascented to by the president in it’s current form, the Uganda Human Organ Donation and Transplant Bill 2021 will seek to regulate the donation of organs, cells and tissues as well as their transplant.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said that, “The demand for organ transplants is high, withought the law, we are bound to operate in errors. This is a good step for us in the health fraternity, it will help the ministry come up with amicable ways go harmonise organ donations and transplants while addressing the issues of illicit trading and protection of the dignity and identity of every person so as to guarantees their respect and integrity.”

With over 123 years in existence, Lubaga hospital boasts of close to 240 bed capacity referral unit offering a full range of specialised services.

The Hospital’s executive Director, Dr. Julius Luyimbaazi believes that they are well placed to handle the task ahead.

“Being the second-oldest Hospital in the country, we take pride in having taken care of the health care needs of Ugandans for the last 122 years, through times of war, epidemics, natural disasters not forgeting COVID-19 pandemic and now the budding Ebola threat. We are a tested and a highly accredited team ready to embark on this,” stated Dr. Julius Luyimbaazi

Established in 1899 by the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, Rubaga Hospital is said to be the oldest Catholic hospital in Uganda owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala and is accredited by the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau.

It also functions as the teaching hospital for the Lubaga Health Training Institution.
