Nkumba University Council Chair, Dr. Christopher Samuel Mayanja, has revealed that the institution is transitioning to a competence-based curriculum (CBC).

Speaking during the School of Law Moot Court launch on Tuesday, 14th April 2026, Dr Mayanja said the university is deliberately restructuring its academic approach to meet directives issued by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), which emphasize hands-on learning and skills development. “We are aligning our programs with national standards to ensure that our graduates are not only knowledgeable but also competent and ready for the job market,” he said.

Presided over by the Principal Judge, Jane Frances Abodo, the event was held at Nkumba University, attracting students, staff, and key stakeholders in the legal fraternity.

Dr Mayanja described the moot court as a transformative investment in legal education, noting that it represents a deliberate effort by the university to bridge the gap between theory and practice. “This moot court will enable our students to simulate real courtroom proceedings. It is intended to prepare students for the realities of legal practice by exposing them to practical experiences early enough,” he said.

He added that the project reflects years of planning and resource mobilization aimed at strengthening the quality of legal training at the institution.

The launch of the moot court comes at a time when Uganda’s higher education sector is undergoing reforms driven by NCHE, which has in recent years pushed universities to adopt competence-based curricula. The approach prioritizes practical skills, critical thinking, and workplace readiness over purely theoretical instruction.

Dr. Mayanja further commended the Principal Judge for officiating at the ceremony, saying her presence elevated the significance of the milestone.

The development marks a new chapter in the university’s efforts to enhance professional training, particularly in law, where practical exposure is increasingly viewed as essential to improving the quality of justice delivery.
