NAKAKAAWA FAITH PRISCILLA
Pitched away in the lush, hilly neighborhood of Makindye, just south of the Capital, Kampala, sits a cozy yet vibrant spot known as Cynthia’s Taste Haven. Founded in 2022 by Cynthia Namulondo, a passionate Ugandan chef with a flair for fusion cuisine, the restaurant has quickly become a favorite among locals and tourists.
Cynthia’s dream began in her grandmother’s kitchen, where she learned to mix traditional Ugandan flavors with global dishes. After studying culinary arts in Nairobi and working briefly in Cape Town, she returned home with a mission to bring world-class cuisine to the heart of Kampala without losing the soul of local tradition.
The restaurant, nestled between tall mango trees and colorful bougainvillea, offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Its terrace overlooks a gentle slope with panoramic views of the city. At night, the space comes alive with fairy lights, soft jazz music, and the aroma of grilled tilapia, slow-cooked goat stew, and her signature passion fruit glazed chicken.
Cynthia’s menu changes with the seasons but always includes fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Her weekend brunch, featuring cassava waffles, matooke omelets, and hibiscus mimosas, has become a sensation. Beyond food, Cynthia’s Taste Haven has become a hub for creative souls, hosting poetry nights, live acoustic sessions, and monthly farmers’ markets.
For Cynthia, it’s not just a restaurant but a celebration of culture, connection, and homegrown excellence. “I wanted to create a space where people can come together, enjoy good food, and appreciate the beauty of Ugandan culture,” she says.
As you step into Cynthia’s Taste Haven, you’re greeted by the warm atmosphere, delicious food scent, laughter, and music. “It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and community is at the forefront.” Said Jackline Nakitende, one of the revelers found at Cynthia’s Haven.
The demand for quality dining experiences is on the rise in Uganda, driven by a growing middle class and increasing tourism. As a result, local restaurants are innovating and adapting to meet the changing tastes and preferences of their customers.
Local restaurants like Cynthia’s Taste Haven are leading the way in showcasing Uganda’s culinary diversity. These establishments are not only serving delicious food but also provide a platform for cultural exchange and community building.
