Nkumba University continued their impressive run at the ongoing Inter-University Games with a commanding 2–0 victory over Uganda Martyrs University, registering their third win of the tournament.
The Beach Boys drew first blood just 15 minutes after kick-off, carving open the UMU defence with a simple yet incisive through ball. Goal-poacher Abbey Kavuma latched onto it, left the backline flat-footed, and calmly slotted home to give Nkumba the lead.
With little separating the two sides, the contest remained finely poised at halftime.
Uganda Martyrs returned for the second half with renewed strategy, launching a series of counter-attacks in search of an equalizer. However, Nkumba stood firm at the back, repelling every breakthrough attempt.
By the 70th minute, UMU’s resistance had waned, and Nkumba capitalized, breaking through a shaky defence to mount a decisive attack. Once again, it was Abbey Kavuma who delivered, applying a split-second, composed finish to double Nkumba’s advantage.
With a brace to his name, Abbey Kavuma is now urging his teammates to stay focused and push for the title. “We got the maximum points as planned. The goal is to top the table and eventually lift the trophy,” he said.
The victory means Nkumba University has now won three matches out of four at the ongoing 20th Edition of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games taking place at Uganda Christian University, Mukono.
The Beach Boys edged Kyambogo University 1–0 in a tense encounter that carried a do-or-die feel yesterday.
