Mutaasa Uthman, a 39-year-old resident of Bombo Kalule in Luweero district, has found a way to navigate the challenges of daily life on two wheels. He owns a Bajaj CT125 motorcycle, which he acquired in March 2023 to reduce his daily transportation expenses.

Mutaasa travels from Bombo to Nakawa, Kampala, five days a week, and says his motorcycle has been a game-changer. “This motorcycle has helped me cut my monthly transport expenditure from four hundred thousand Ugandan shillings a month to now two hundred thousand, enabling me to grow other aspects of my life,” he said.

The motorcycle has not only saved Mutaasa money but also provided a convenient way to transport his siblings and produce from their family farm. He lauds the Bajaj CT125 for its fuel efficiency, comfort, and reliability.

“A basic car will need fuel not less than forty thousand shillings (40,000/=) to travel to and from Kampala and Kalule in one day; the motorcycle uses that for four days, and if there are extra movements involved, three days,” Mutaasa explained.

Providing expert insight, Mwanje, a mechanic from Kalule, elaborated on the strengths of the Bajaj CT125: “The Bajaj CT125 is a popular choice in Uganda for its affordability and ease of acquiring spare parts, fuel efficiency of 55 kilometers per liter, and simple maintenance. However, we advise our clients to be aware of potential issues with component durability and prioritize regular maintenance to ensure the bike’s long-term reliability.”

The Bajaj CT125 remains a trusted and fuel-efficient commuter bike, known for its practicality and affordability, though some users note the importance of addressing potential maintenance needs to preserve its durability. For Mutaasa, the benefits of owning a motorcycle far outweigh the challenges.

According to Nakitended Jackie, a resident of Entebbe, Boda Boda’s are generally user friendly when it comes to facilitating small-scale businesses, “In Kampala, boda bodas are essential for navigating the city’s busy streets.”

Kampala’s roads are often clogged with vehicles, especially during peak hours, but boda bodas excel at slipping through tight spaces and taking alternative routes. This agility reduces travel time significantly, providing a quicker option for commuters with time-sensitive needs.

“Boda-bodas offer lower fares for short-distance trips, making them accessible to a wide range of people. Additionally, their fuel efficiency ensures that riders can keep expenses manageable, which is particularly beneficial in Uganda’s tightening economy.” Added Nakitende

Known for their speed and maneuverability, these two-wheelers provide a practical solution to the challenges posed by traffic congestion and high transportation costs. For many, boda bodas are not just a convenient mode of transport; they are a lifeline for accessing work, schools, markets, and other essential destinations. They also support the livelihoods of riders, many of whom rely on their motorcycles to sustain their families.
