When Nkumba University holds its 27th Graduation Ceremony on October 25, 2025, among the graduands will be Mwanje Gideon, fondly referred to as Batapa, who will be conferred with a Bachelor of Laws degree.
Born and raised in Luwero, Mwanje says his dream of pursuing law was triggered by the hardships and injustices he experienced at childhood. “Growing up, I faced numerous injustices that sparked my desire to make a difference,” he recalls.
He draws inspiration from American lawyer Christopher Darden, whose words, “I chose to go to law school because I thought someday, I will make a difference at home,” stirred a fire in him. “I vowed to create a better life for myself and those around me,” he explains.
When he joined Nkumba University, Mwanje promised himself to remain focused and true to his values.“I refused to let anything compromise my potential, and I remained committed to those who believed in me,” he said.
What started as a purely academic pursuit quickly blossomed into a journey of leadership, innovation, and the thoughtfulness of others. “I came solely for academics but got entangled in leadership, research, marketing and more,” he admits.
During his years at Nkumba, Mwanje authored the first refugee law book in East Africa, founded the Nkumba University Research Club, established the Moot Court Society, and started both the School of Law Journal and Magazine.
His leadership journey was equally remarkable. He rose to become Law School President, Attorney General of the Guild Government (2024/2025), President of the Uganda Law Students’ Association (ULSA), and later President of the Law Students’ Association of East Africa (LSAEA). “These opportunities allowed me to travel across East Africa, connecting with fellow students and high-ranking personalities like Ministers and Presidents,” he said, reflecting on how his classroom knowledge merged with real-world leadership.
As graduation draws near, gratitude defines his reflections. “I thank the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude Lubega, former University Secretary, Prof. Francis Kasekende, Dr. Bbosa Sulaiman, and all University staff from all schools for the support rendered,” he noted.
He also extended appreciation to Dr. Nakanwangi Susan, Dean Nabalende Witness, Dr. Anne Abaho, Counsel Adam Kirumira, Rev. Laban, Administrative Assistants, and Nkumba University News for standing by him always.
Looking back, Mwanje says he is not leaving Nkumba the same way he came. “I landed here with a meek personality, I am leaving with boldness, ready to serve, to lead, and to make an impact, Indeed it has been a journey from learning to leading. I have led, and I will continue.” He affirmed.
