Nkumba University has a new Guild President, Derrick Mawanda, who was sworn in on May 2, 2025, at a ceremony presided over by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jude T Lubega.
In his acceptance speech, Mawanda pledged to uphold the University’s rules and regulations and abide by the Guild Constitution.
“I pledge to bear true allegiance to the Guild Constitution of Nkumba University, honour the trust bestowed upon me, support my peers, and contribute positively to our Institution’s growth,” Mawanda said in his acceptance speech. “Together, we rise to our challenges, celebrate our success, and lead to inspire others through word and action.”
Prof. Lubega, in his address, charged the newly elected guild leaders to be guiding lights to their subjects. “Leadership is knowing the way and showing the way; be that guiding light to those that have entrusted you with power,” he said. He also urged the guild leaders to maintain a harmonious environment and avoid getting involved in issues that may land them into trouble.
Mawanda won the highly contested guild election on April 26, 2025, beating his counterparts Katende Muhammad and Alinda Marvin. He will serve a one-year tenure running through to April 2026.
As Mawanda takes office, students have high expectations, particularly regarding constitutional amendments to allow electoral colleges for the election of special groups like People With Disabilities and Hostel representatives. Currently, anyone can represent these groups, and many students are seeking change.
Mawanda’s campaign strategy focused on student welfare, service delivery, and accountability, encapsulated in his signature slogan, “For the People.” He is expected to transform the affairs at the Entebbe-based institution, prioritizing the needs of students.
The new Guild President faces a challenging tenure, but with his commitment to student welfare and good governance, students are hopeful for a brighter future.
