Nkumba University and Uganda Martyrs University settled for a 1-1 draw in a competitive fixture on Wednesday at Nkumba’s home turf in Entebbe.
Goals from either half by Nkumba’s Ismael Lubega and UMU’s Sentongo Akbar were enough to make sure that no team walk away with a win.
It was the hosts that started the game on a high note, and in just two minutes ,Ismael Lubega swiftly seized an opportunity, capitalizing on the shaky UMU’s backline and finding the back of the net sending Nkumba fans in a Frenzy.
This early goal fueled the hosts’ resilience and determination producing numerous attacks and laying pressure on the matyrs defense Despite a barrage of attacks and multiple chances, Nkumba fell short of securing a second goal at the end of the first half ending the first half with a commanding 1-0 lead.
In the second half. UMU, however, swiftly changed the narrative with Sentongo Akbar’s equalizing goal in the 48th minute. The goal shifted the Dynamics of the game , presenting a transformed UMU side in the second half.
Both teams continued to produce numerous attacks, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats, yet neither could convert opportunities and the fixture ending 1-1 .
Reflecting on the outcome, Nkumba’s coach, Bbosa Sulaiman, expressed concern about the challenge awaiting his team as they prepare to face UMU on their home turf in Nkozi.
“With this result, the pressure is on our side. They’ve secured a draw here with a goal, meaning we are left with a mountain to climb going to their home turf in Nkozi.”
Conversely, UMU’s head coach, Eric Kisule, conveyed satisfaction with the draw and conveyed optimism for the return leg at their home turf.
“We are happy to pick a point from this game. Having picked a draw here, we can go all the way and seal it in Nkozi,” remarked Kisule.
The two teams will meet again on a date that is yet to be announced.
