Nkumba University Guild Electoral Commission has cleared 3 to contest for the position of Guild President. This took place on Tuesday, 15 April 2025, at the Guild Parliament in a vetting exercise that sought to assess the candidates’ capabilities and potential to lead the student body.
The three aspirants, Mawanda Derrick from the School of Law, Alinda Marvin from the School of Commercial Art and Industrial Design (SCIAD), and Katende Muhammad, also from the School of Law, were found suitable for the highly contested Guild Presidential race.
The panel granted each candidate leeway to express interest in vying for the position of Guild President with sought-after assertions on what they think deems them fit for the position.
The candidates were then subjected to a Q&A session as the panel tasked the candidates to make clarifications on the issues at hand, which they say may determine the pre- and post-election atmosphere.
Shortly after being cleared for the race, vocal Mawanda Derrick, known for his enthusiastic campaign, was seen engaging students as he sought their approval and votes, accompanied by his partisans distributing his campaign posters. A prominent student sympathizer, an act that earned him the title “public lawyer,” Mawanda pledges to promote transparency, improve student welfare, and encourage inclusive leadership.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Alinda Marvin, who served as Mr. Nkumba asserted that his return to the limelight will be guided by the slogan “Bold Leadership with Transparency” as his motto. Oratory mastermind, Katende Muhammad says he is here to serve, lead, and inspire fellow students.
As the political temperature began rising, a scuffle ensued between Mawanda’s mobilizer, Famous, and an Alinda supporter due to alleged insults. However, the issue was later addressed, and peace was restored between the two parties.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Atuna Sabrine Henry, assured that the commission would remain neutral throughout the electoral process, warning members against siding with any aspirant. “The biggest choice will be left in the hands of the students who know the kind of leader they want to entrust with power,” she said.
Nkumba University will be heading to the polls on the 26th April 2025 in an election that will see students choose their leaders who will serve the University as the 31st Guild Government.
