Music Fiesta festival, Nyege Nyege 2022 took Uganda by storm over the weekend after foiled attempts by parliament to terminate the annual event citing immorality.

The four day (Thursday – Sunday) event started on Thursday with thousands of revellers from across East Africa and the world flocking Itanda falls in Jinja.

The 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community, Hon. Alitwala Kadaga graced the festival giving revellers a sigh of relief after parliament labeled the event ‘immoral’, a thing that left organizers on tenterhooks.

Nyege Nyege means dancing loosely in some local languages.
But it also has sexual connotations in East Africa’s most commonly spoken ligo-Kiswahili.

Tipsy crowds were seen dancing to a mix of songs with excitement

On the final day, partying seemed even more interesting as revellers couldn’t imagine that the four day party extravaganza was in its final hours.

African cultural dancers were the highlight of the event as they hyped-up the African traditional dances at the sound beats of traditional folk music.

This year’s edition was organized by Talent Africa with Uganda Waragi as the headline sponsor. Bell lager was on board to spice it up with mpola enjoyments.

It has to be remembered that critics including several Members of Parliament led by the speaker of Parliament had described it as a “breeding ground for sexual immorality” and “homosexuality”.

Therefore in order for the organizers to get permission to proceed with the festival, they had to ensure that there were no sex orgies, nudity, vulgarity among other immoral acts.

Nyege Nyege-Uganda was lauched in late 2015. There has been 5 physical editions since then but the event suffered a two year hiatus due to COVID-19.
