A tense atmosphere marked the swearing-in ceremony of Mawanda Derick as the new Guild President of Nkumba University. The event, held at Mpanga Library, was disrupted by supporters of Alinda Marvin, who protested against the election results.
The Electoral Committee Chairperson, Sabrina, announced Mawanda Derick as the winner, but many students were unhappy with the outcome. Joan Nankya, a student, expressed her discontent, saying, “I believe that Alinda Marvin was the real winner.”
As Mawanda Derick prepared to take his oath, Marvin’s supporters gathered outside the hall, holding signs and shouting for justice. “We want the truth!” they chanted. Kato Ssentamu, a protest leader, waved a banner with Marvin’s name on it, saying, “We will not accept this!”
The protest grew louder as more students joined in, their voices echoing through the hall. Meanwhile, security officers stood guard at the doors, closely monitoring the situation to ensure Mawanda Derick’s swearing-in proceeded without interruption.
Despite the commotion outside, Mawanda Derick was sworn in as the new Guild President. The protest highlighted the deep divisions among students over the election results, with many calling for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
