The 12th annual Rotary Cancer Run held at Kololo Independence Grounds on Sunday 27th, August witnessed a massive turnout, with thousands gathering to support a humanitarian cause.

Featuring parallel runs in Entebbe, Jinja, and Mbarara, the event rallied people from across Uganda and around the world under the theme “Run for Hope.”

The goal was to raise 2 billion Ugandan shillings for the construction of two bunkers at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya, equipped to house LINAC cancer testing and treatment machines to amplify the country’s fight against cancer.

According to Chief Runner, Fabian Kasi, the managing director-Centenary Bank, the funds generated through the marathon will contribute not only to crucial research and essential treatment but also to unwavering support for those affected by the disease. “The proceeds from this marathon will significantly contribute to research, essential treatment, and support for those affected by this disease.”

Kasi, further emphasized that while cancer is indeed a strong adversary, the combined strength of a united front is mightier. “Cancer is a formidable foe, but together, we are even stronger.”

“Every step taken today symbolizes hope and solidarity,” he added.

The collective footfalls not only echoed with determination but also resonated with global solidarity, as participants spanning continents united to join the fight.

Since its inception in 2012, The Cancer Run’s remarkable journey has borne witness to significant achievements.

Notably, the construction of a 36-bed Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital, which caters to over 800 patients annually stands as a testament to the collective might of those who have rallied behind the cause.

The annual event has also fostered the construction of Mengo Hospital blood bank, responsible for supplying close to 2000 units of blood each year.

The roots of the Rotary Cancer Run trace back to PDG Steven Mwanje’s visionary goal to establish a Center of Excellence dedicated to early cancer detection, treatment, and comprehensive care in 2011.

The driving force behind this vision materialized into the Uganda Rotary Cancer Program, with the groundbreaking taking place on April 22, 2011, presided over by the then Rotary International President Ray Klingnismith.

The journey of the Rotary Cancer Run has been interwoven with the generosity of various stakeholders.

Corporate entities like Centenary Bank, Crown Beverages Limited, and international partners AISPO have provided invaluable support, lending essential resources to turn the vision into reality.

As the Rotary Cancer Run continues to chart its course, this year’s proceeds have been earmarked for the construction of two bunkers to house Linear Accelerators (LINAC) and accompanying equipment at Nsambya Hospital.

These bunkers are poised to be vital components in the arsenal against cancer.
