Nkumba University journalism students are set to benefit from a half-day travel writing training workshop scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Organized by Uganda Uncovered, a Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO), the workshop aims to equip students with the necessary skills to take on travel writing as a beat.
“We are excited to partner with Nkumba University to impart knowledge and skills on how to tell compelling tourism and travel stories,” said Julius Luwembo from Uganda Uncovered.
The training is part of Uganda Uncovered’s efforts to promote tourism and marketing Uganda as a global tourism destination, in liaison with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.
For the past four years, the team has been engaging young writers and storytellers on how to craft compelling tourism narratives.
Early this year, Uganda Uncovered resumed travel writing training with Makerere University before engaging Victoria University, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), and later Muteesa I Royal University.
“The primary objective of this training is to equip emerging writers with the expertise to craft compelling tourism and travel narratives,” notes Juliu Luwambo. “Uganda boasts an abundance of captivating stories, but we lack strategic storytellers who can showcase our country’s beauty and position it as a premier tourist destination.”
The training is also expected to impart digital marketing skills and expose participants to relevant online tools necessitating travel writing. At the end of each session, participants will be exposed to opportunities in digital marketing, tourism, conservation, plus story composition and writing.
Facilitators have been drawn from various professions, including journalism, information technology, marketing, public relations, and photography.
“We believe that this training will not only enhance the students’ writing skills but also prepare them for the 5th Edition of the Travel Writing Competitions, which will be launched in April this year,” asserts Julius Luwembo.
