Nkumba University’s School of Commercial Industrial Art and Design held its 24th annual fashion show on Friday last week drawing a packed audience eager to witness the latest designs redefining Uganda’s fashion landscape.
Held at the University Sports Grounds, the event showcased the exceptional talents of students, featuring four distinct segments: creative wear, accessories, print, and Upscale recycle.
“I wanted to create something truly unique, blending traditional African elements with modern designs,” said Kaya Davis, a participant whose collection impressed the audience.
Innocent Romeo, another participant, shared his inspiration for choosing Nigerian wear: “It’s rich in heritage and offers endless possibilities for creative expression.”
Nakamanya Teodora, whose ‘Kikoyi Bridal Changing Dress’ stunned the audience with its beauty, revealed her design philosophy: “My inspiration was to create something unique, showcasing African print in a breathtaking way.”
The standout designs included Thembo Benoni’s elegant ‘Red Carpet Suits’ and Naturinda Violet’s ‘Vintage Evening Wear’, which transported the audience to a bygone era.
Nakamanya Teodora emerged victorious, taking home the $300 USD prize money.
“The students have demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication, and artistic vision,” said Mr. Charles Kaggwa, Dean of the School of Commercial Industrial Art and Design. “I urge parents to continue nurturing their children’s creative potential.”
Addressing Nakamanya Teodora, Mr. Kaggwa added: “Treat this $300 USD prize money as startup capital to establish your own fashion label. The sky is the limit.”
The annual fashion show aims to inspire a new generation of fashion designers to push boundaries and redefine style.
With its 24th edition, the event còntinues to provide a platform for Uganda’s emerging fashionistars.
