Nkumba University’s Mpanga Library was abuzz with excitement as the United Nations Association of Uganda, Nkumba Chapter (UNAU-NU Chapter) hosted a youth dialogue on voluntary work and sustainable development.
Under the theme, “Leaving No One Behind,” the event brought together a diverse group of young people, experts, and development activists to discuss the importance of voluntary work and its impact on achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The guest of honor, UNA-Uganda Secretary Mr. Baguma Richard, emphasized the significance of young-voices inclined interactivity in achieving the SDGs. “We can’t start to shape the future without the input of the youth, they hold the biggest share when it comes to Volunteerism. Humbleness and accepting to learn is the start of voluntary work,” he said. He commended Nkumba Chapter for being one of the longest serving and most successful chapters.
Jennifer Kauppila, an advocacy officer and secretary general in UNA Finland, highlighted the importance of volunteering in developing countries, international relations, and promoting gender equality. She emphasized the significance of the SDGs and encouraged the participants to take action if we are to achieve them by the set period.
The event was moderated by Dr. Jemba Michael Senkoole, who ensured a lively and interactive discussion with a keen focus on the Voluntary National Review (VNR), a process through which countries assess and present national progress made in implementing the 17 SDGs.
A panel discussion featured five experts, including Mr. Prosper Tejeka, Ms. Kansiime Ruth, Ms. Nanfuka Edith, Mr. Ambrose, and Mr. Okaayi Ote. The panelists shared their experiences and insights on engaging individuals in their institutions, innovative studies, and holding relevant stakeholders accountable. The participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the panelists, seeking answers and solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
Officials have profoundly noted that “As we approach Agenda 2030, tracking the progress of the global goals is crucial.”
Speaking on behalf of the University, the Dean of Students, Mr. Christopher Kimuli lauded UNA officials for their relentless efforts towards promoting SDGs, volunteerism, and having youth-centered dialogues.
The dialogue closed with the launch of the Chapter T-Shirts and the tree planting.
United Nations Association (UNA) is a worldwide organization aimed at maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, supporting sustainable development, and climate action, this event was a significant step towards achieving these goals.
