The highly anticipated Nkumba University Fashion Show 2024 lived up to its promise, showcasing the incredible talents of the institution’s fashion design students.

The event, held yesterday, 20th October 2024 was filled with creativity, innovation, and style.

Inspired by the words of Coco Chanel, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only… Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, and what is happening,” the students presented their unique interpretations of individual themes.

The show kicked off with Thembo Benoni’s ‘Red Carpet Suits’, evoking the glamour of Hollywood with sophisticated and elegant designs. Naturinda Violet then transported the audience to a bygone era with ‘Vintage Evening Wear’, featuring intricate designs that exuded romance.

Nakamanya Teodora showcased the beauty of African print in bridal wear with ‘Kikoyi Bridal Changing Dress’, while Nannungi Comfort Christin dazzled with vibrant colors in her West African-inspired Ankara dress.

Namaara Patra redefined sustainability with ‘Necktie Upcycle’, proving that fashion and eco-friendliness can coexist. Ahwera Bonnitah enchanted with ‘Laced Evening Dinner Dress’, and Tendo Jemimah Nabakka celebrated African heritage with ‘Zulu Bridal Wear’.

Other standout collections included Kyojeta Honest’s ‘Kinyakole Bridal Wear’, blending tradition and modernity; Kaaya Davis’s reimagined menswear with ‘Dashiki Men’s Bridal Wear’; Ssekawungu Hassan’s modest chic ‘Muslim Tunic’; Nowak Romeo Innocent’s statement-making ‘Agbada Men’s Bridal’; and Mugwaneza Sylvie’s show-stopping ‘Patched Evening Wear’.

After a fierce competition, Nakamanya Teodora emerged victorious, taking home the $300 USD prize money courtesy of the Chief Guest,  His Worship the Mayor of Entebbe.

The Dean, School of Commercial Industrial Art and Design, Mr. Charles Kagwa, lauded the participants for their artisanal style, urging the winner to utilize the prize money wisely. “You have proven your exceptional talent; keep growing, and the future of fashion will be bright indeed. Consider investing in a sewing machine and startup materials to propel your career.”

Presided over by His Worship Fabrice Rulinda, the Mayor, Entebbe Municipality, this year’s Fashion Show attracted approximately 500 attendees, including students from nearby secondary schools. This annual event purposes to inspire new generation of fashion designers to push boundaries and redefine style.
