The political atmosphere at Nkumba University has intensified following the clearance of three candidates to run for the Guild Presidential seat. Mawanda Derrick, Katende Muhammad, and Alinda Marvin were declared fit to represent students by the Nkumba University Guild Electoral Commission, chaired by Atuna Sabrine Henry.
Katende Muhammad, known for his oratory skills, has adopted a door-to-door campaign strategy, targeting every hostel, rental, and residence within and around the university. “Together, let’s make our university a home for all students. I am here to lead, serve, and inspire,” Katende told students, assuring them of his resolve to foster understanding and harmony in diversity.
Katende’s team swept through various hostels, including Nabagereka, PAM, Empire, and Villa, before capturing Bwaise, which harbors approximately 50% of students.
Many say, his charismatic leadership and genuine interest in student welfare is a crowd puller, with his team’s energetic chants and songs adding to the lively hype.
The introduction of Alinda Marvin, reportedly backed by NRM, has changed the dynamics of the race. “This is a game-changer,” one observer noted. As campaigns intensify and election day draws close, candidates will be doing everything within their might to play the right cards.
Open campaigns are expected to take place on April 25, 2025, a day before elections. The students will have to decide their leaders before the close of business on Saturday, 26th April 2025.
